FR Review:
Michael Dwyer is celebrated for his commitment to historically classical architecture and preservationist traditions. Insiders tell us this firm is extremely sensitive about maintaining the strict integrity of its projects—to the point of being dubbed "fastidious preservationists." We hear Dwyer has a strong command of historical reference and is adept at renovating prewar building interiors. Sources praise Dwyer's impressive intellect and charming nature while noting that the firm's "confidence in its skills" may come across as rigid to the unsuspecting clients. Insiders tell us this firm works closely and well with some of the area's better-known interior decorators.

Formed In 1996, the company currently employs a staff of six. Dwyer, a graduate of Penn, previously worked with Buttrick, White and Burtis. Half of the firm's work takes place in Manhattan, with the remainder mostly in the Hamptons and Connecticut. Around 90 percent of the firm's yearly workload is residential, including high-end gut renovations and new-home construction and alterations. In 1995, Dwyer was dubbed one of the "Young Old Fogies" of architecture by the New York Times for his devotion to the classical past.

The firm generally takes on mid-sized projects but continues to take on smaller projects as well as large multimillion-dollar endeavors (including epic yachts and the renovation of Rudolph Nureyev's former apartment in the Dakota). He recently edited the book, "Great Houses of the Hudson River," highlighting the architecture and decorative arts of the period. Dwyer charges an hourly rate or standard percentage of overall construction costs.

Representative Client Comments:
"He understates rather than overstates." "He is an absolutely wonderful neoclassical designer." "Scrupulously honest." "I really appreciate their intellectual approach to the architectural challenge." "Draws like an angel." "Unparalleled as a historic preservationist."
